He is the patron saint of animals. That's why on his feast day, visitors can see lines of animals outside the church waiting to be blessed. The previous evening is equally as important, when bonfires are lit in towns such as Calonge or Santanyí to celebrate the feast of Saint Anthony, with roasts organised by families and friends taking over the streets.
Cala d'Or dresses up to honour its patroness Santa María del Mar from the 2nd to 21st August. During these dates, a wide variety of activities are organised for all kinds of audiences. There are activities for children, sports, night parties, an open-air cinema, markets and traditional religious celebrations that show the real culture of the island.
